Information on the common Brown Rat
It is believed that the Common Brown Rat originated in northern China and that they arrived in England having found their way onto ships docking in Norway. Antarctica is now the only continent that is free of Brown Rats. For the most part they are found wherever humans are situated and they are the most successful non-human mammal in terms of populating the planet.
Rats are able to breed from the age of 10-12 weeks and the gestation period is only 3 weeks. Coupled with 3-6 litters per year and producing on average between 5 and 10 offspring at a time they are able to increase in numbers rapidly. They are true omnivores and will eat pretty much anything but favour cereals.
Rats are carriers of many pathogens which can cause a number of diseases including Weil's disease, rat bite fever, cryptosporidiosis, viral hemorrhagic fever, Q fever and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
They sometimes go unnoticed even in residential dwellings although there are several telltale signs:
- Droppings: Large rice shaped and brown in colour.
- Holes & Nests: Rats are very good at burrowing and creating routes to and from their nests. Rat holes are usually obvious. Their nests are made from shredded materials such as soft fabrics and insulation.
- Scratching Sounds: In quiet environments rats can be heard scratching and digging under floorboards and kitchen cabinets.
We have many years experience in dealing with rat infestations and can provide comprehensive, timely and discreet solutions to your problems.
